Liberia’s New LEITI MSG Sets Bold Agenda for Transparency in the Extractive Sector

The Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) has set an ambitious agenda to enhance transparency and accountability in the country’s extractive sector.

The newly appointed MSG, chaired by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. Wilmot Paye, will lead Liberia’s EITI process for the next three years, focusing on key reforms that promote openness and public trust.

Speaking today at the MSG orientation program held at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia, Minister Paye emphasized the need for a proactive and robust MSG that ensures transparency in the management of the extractive sector. He highlighted two critical priorities for the MSG:

Operationalizing the Beneficial Ownership Register – This initiative aims to disclose the real owners of companies operating in the extractive sector, reducing corruption risks and ensuring accountability.

Enhancing Contract Transparency– The MSG will work to make extractive contracts explicitly accessible to the public, ensuring citizens have a clear understanding of agreements governing Liberia’s natural resources.
The orientation program featured insightful presentations from:

Cllr. Nagbalee Warner – A distinguished legal expert and the first Head of the LEITI Secretariat, who provided historical perspectives on Liberia’s EITI implementation and the role of constituent members.

Jeffrey N. Yates– Head of the LEITI Secretariat, who made presentation on praticalizing the MSG operation.
The International EITI Secretariat – Representatives who shared global best practices and reaffirmed support for Liberia’s EITI process.

The newly appointed MSG is committed to ensuring that Liberia adheres to the EITI Standard, strengthening good governance and maximizing the benefits of the country’s natural resource wealth for all citizens.

LEITI remains dedicated to fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration and will continue to engage civil society, government, and companies in advancing resource transparency.
