The theme of this year’s outreach is “Understanding and Using the LEITI Report to monitor the use of Resource Revenue and Demanding accountability”. The citizens and residences of these counties lavished praises on the Government for the initiative. The participants raised concerns ranging from implementation of social agreements by the logging companies to the issue of social benefits of the communities in which minerals and other resources are being exploited. They also frowned on authorities for not taking action, in many instances, where fraud, smuggling, illegal mining, etc are reported and proven to be true.
The dissemination and town hall meetings with the citizens and residences of the various counties on the 2nd EITI Report which, covers payments made to the Government of Liberia by sixty-four (64) mining, oil, agriculture, and forestry companies during the 12-month period from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, was formally launched and released by the LEITI Multi-Stakeholders Group (MSG) on Thursday February 18, 2010. A summary which covers twelve pages (12) of the Report was prepared both in booklet and poster forms.
The interactive discussions brought together local Government officials, Chiefs and Traditional leaders, women and youth groups, students and school administrators from each of the surrounding districts.
Meanwhile, the next round of outreach is scheduled to begin on Thursday June 3, 2010 in Sinoe and Lofa counties respectively.
