The Chief Champion of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) and President of the Republic of Liberia, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf during the week appointed a new Multi-stakeholders Steering Group (MSG) to steer the affairs of the EITI process in Liberia for the next three years. The appointment of new MSG is in-keeping with the Act which established the LEITI.
According to the letter of appointment, The Chief Champion expressed her confidence in the ability of the appointees and trust that they will carry out their responsibilities to the credit of themselves and their country.
The appointment of a new LEITI MSG is considered by many pundits as a further demonstration of the immense political will that the LEITI currently enjoys and the continuous commitment of the Government to the implementation of EITI in Liberia. These pundits believed that the LEITI is one of several steps initiated by the Government to ensure transparency and accountability.
The appointment, as consistent with the International EITI principles and criteria, was drawn from the Government of Liberia, the Civil Society, and the Private sector. The Government of Liberia is represented on the new MSG by seven ministries and agencies including Ministry of Finance as Chair, Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy as co-chair, the National Oil Company of Liberia, the National Legislature, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Forestry Development Authority (FDA). The civil society is represented by Publish What You Pay-Liberia Coalition, Gold and Diamond Workers Union of Liberia, Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), and Development Consortium while the Private sector is represented by ArcelorMittal, BHP Billiton, Chevron, the Liberia Timber Association, and Gold & Diamond Brokers & Dealers Association of Liberia.
The EITI, which Liberia has implemented for over three years now, is a global standard aimed at promoting transparency in taxes and other fees paid by extractive companies and the revenues Government receives from the companies. The EITI pursues its aim through regular disclosure, verification and publication of all industries payments and government revenues related to the operations of all extractive sectors. About thirty - three (33) resource-rich countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas are members of the EITI.
